Many brand owners, packaging buyers and graphic designers like to encorporate metallic effects onto their labels, attempting to add a ‘superior’ feel to their products.

Metallic labels are nothing new in the industry.  For years they have either been printed using spot colours onto a metallic base label, or by printing metallic spot colours or foils onto a standard white paper.  However there have always been limitations when it comes to complex designs and when attempting to manipulate the metallic (eg adding a colour gradient).  The methods of printing have also been predominantly only suitable for longer runs, as well as requiring expensive printing plates.

The latest advances in digital technology now means that Labelservice can offer fully bespoke metallic printing for digital labels, using Color Logic.

The Color Logic system allows eye-catching, decorative effects to be incorporated inexpensively into your labels. Using colour palettes and plug-ins for existing software, the Color Logic design suite runs in Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and QuarkXpress and can easily be used to give your labels the wow factor. Color Logic allows graphic designers the freedom to create a virtually unlimited array of metallic colours and decorative effects using a choice of over 250 colours.  We can supply a colour chart equivalent to a Pantone book, and one encorporates the colour references in exactly the same way you would a Pantone colour.

We can also add a strong opaque white for text, or to sit behind a barcode.  We can also add the white to almost all of the label, giving the effect of a foil or metallic ink printing onto a white material – just without all of the plate costs and minimum order quantities!

There is no design too intricate and, being a digital solution, the technology is perfect for shorter run and multiple sort jobs.

Press Proofs are also available, should you want to have a look at your designs at an early stage, before comitting to a full production run.

This system has almost endless possibilities and is already proving incredibly popular with a wide range of manufacturers including cosmetics, car care and food companies.

Digital Metallic Labels FAQs

What are digital metallic labels?

Digital metallic labels are a specialised type of label that utilise digital printing technology to produce metallic finishes. Unlike traditional metallic labels, which often rely on flexographic printing methods and metallic inks, digital metallic labels offer greater design flexibility and colour consistency. These labels are particularly well-suited for complex designs that require intricate details and a wide range of metallic colours. The use of digital technology allows for the incorporation of eye-catching, decorative effects at a cost-effective rate, making it an increasingly popular choice across various industry sectors. Digital metallic labels can be produced in both gold and silver foils, as well as a myriad of other metallic shades, offering a premium look and feel to your product packaging.

What are some examples of complex designs where digital metallic labels are suitable?

Gradient Effects: Traditional printing methods struggle with gradients, especially when metallic elements are involved. Digital printing allows for smooth transitions between different shades of metallic colours, creating a visually stunning gradient effect.

Multi-Coloured Logos: Brands with multi-coloured logos can benefit from digital metallic printing, which can accurately reproduce complex logos with multiple metallic hues, all in a single print run.

Textured Patterns: Digital printing can create textured patterns like damask or paisley in metallic colours, adding a tactile dimension to the label that is both visually appealing and engaging to the touch.

Variable Data: For products that require unique identifiers like QR codes or serial numbers, digital metallic printing can incorporate these elements seamlessly into the design without compromising the metallic finish.

Fine Linework and Typography: Digital printing allows for extremely fine linework and small typography to be printed clearly, even when metallic elements are involved. This is particularly useful for legal text or ingredient lists on product labels.

Photographic Imagery: High-resolution images, especially those with metallic elements, can be printed with great clarity and detail, making digital metallic labels ideal for products that feature complex imagery.

Layered Effects: Digital technology enables layered effects where metallic elements can be overlaid with transparent colours, creating a depth and complexity that is hard to achieve with traditional methods.
